Doing Business Better in Ontario's Boreal

How Ontario can save the Boreal -- and the forest industry
September 28th, 2005

Ontario’s forest industry is at a crossroads. For years, logging companies have been overcutting the Boreal Forest—to the detriment of the Boreal Forest, and even to the detriment of their own future as an industry. Since this overcutting isn’t sustainable, they’ll eventually make themselves extinct, along with the woodland caribou that rely on Boreal Forest that’s undisturbed by roads or industry to survive. That’s bad news for northern communities—and our planet’s health.

Fortunately, Ontario still has a chance to get it right.

In their haste to cut down the Boreal, companies like Weyerhaeuser, Bowater and Abitibi-Consolidated have overlooked a basic truth—that the marketplace has become “greener” than ever. By appealing to increasing consumer demands for environmentally sound practices, forest industry can appeal to a sector of the marketplace that’s growing and, at the same time, maintain market share by differentiating themselves from competitors. They can also help ensure the future of the place that is the source of their livelihood. A place that also happens to play a vital role in global climate, and our planet’s clean air and water.
