ForestEthics Reacts: Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline Decision Delayed a Year

Groundswell of public concern instrumental in the delay

Like its sister Tar Sands pipeline, the Keystone XL, the decision to approve or reject the development of Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline has been delayed for a year, until late 2013.

This announcement, reported in the December 7 edition of the Vancouver Sun, is a direct result of the unprecedented number of people who have signed up to have their voices heard during public hearings on the project, and flies in the face of Enbridge's request for a quick decision on its controversial pipeline.

Instead of a quick approval, the pipeline - and Enbridge - will face more than a year's worth of testimony from citizens across British Columbia who do not want the risky pipeline, as well as mounting opposition from First Nations.

Never in BC's history has a project received such a public outpouring of concern. More than 4,300 residents signed up to speak at community hearings, and 200 people registered to actively engage in the formal hearings.

ForestEthics is an active intervenor and has played a role in registering close to 600 speakers. Congratulations to all for taking a stand – we’ll be there with you throughout.
