Get the Shell Out -- Santa Claus is coming to Shell!
December 5th, 2011
I made my list, I checked it twice, and I can’t believe how naughty Shell has been!
One of my elves told me about Shell’s plans for coalbed methane development in the Sacred Headwaters. Can you imagine fracking in such a serene, ecologically vulnerable and culturally important area? When I heard that local communities and over 60,000 people around the world had already asked Shell to get out of the Headwaters, I knew I had to do something!
I decided to pay a personal visit to Shell on the anniversary of the moratorium on coalbed methane development in the Sacred Headwaters. I wanted to remind Shell they have one year left to abandon their plans and Get the Shell Out of the Sacred Headwaters!
On a windy Monday afternoon in The Hague, Netherlands, I dropped by Shell Headquarters with Rudolph and one of my elves. I brought the biggest lump of coal that could fit through the door to give to the naughty company. My little helpers carried a huge Season’s Greetings card with a message to Shell on behalf of thousands of people like you who are working to Get the Shell Out of the Sacred Headwaters. We came in singing Christmas carols, but instead of the warm welcome that I usually receive, the staff and security of Shell seemed very nervous and annoyed…especially when we decided that the best spot for our lump of coal would be right in front of their entrance.
I started reading from my list Shell’s naughty deeds, and the damage their proposed fracking project would cause. We convinced a spokesperson to take our message directly to naughty little Peter Voser, CEO of Royal Dutch Shell: “You have one year to Get the Shell out of the Sacred Headwaters! Listen to the people and protect instead of destroy!”
We left the postcard and the lump of coal with a promise:
We’ll meet again..
We know where..
We know when!
Seasons greetings & solidarity,
S. Claus
PS - if the BC government doesn't take action to protect the Sacred Headwaters soon, they are going to be on my naughty list, too! Send a message to let BC Premier Christy Clark know that time is running out to kick Shell out for good!
